What is California Proposition 65?

California's Proposition 65 (formally known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires the State of California to maintain and update a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This list includes over 800 chemicals.

Businesses are required to provide clear and reasonable warnings to California residents if their products contain any of these listed chemicals, or if exposure to these chemicals may occur through use of the product.

Why this matters

Prop 65 warnings help consumers make informed decisions about products they use. The presence of a warning does not necessarily mean the product is unsafe when used as directed. It simply means the product contains a chemical on California's list.
